If you are depressed, you’re not alone. About 10 % of men and 20 % of women will experience depression some time in their life.

When I have depressed clients coming into my office, the treatment of choice is CBT, which stands for cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT is recognized to be the most effective talking therapy for depression. I’ll help you distinguish, evaluate and modify the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that accompany your depressive thoughts and symptoms. After that I’ll help you substitute your maladaptive thoughts into healthier ways of thinking and believing, thereby reducing the symptoms of depression.

If you work with me on overcoming depression, you’ll be actively involved in your recovery. You’ll be given homework assignments between sessions to integrate the strategies you’ve learned in the office. In this type of therapy the patient is actively involved in his or her own recovery, has a sense of control, and learns skills that are useful throughout life. CBT typically involves reading about the problem, keeping records between appointments, and practicing new behaviors that will reduce depression.

Medications are very useful for some people in reducing the more acute symptoms, especially when accompanied by cognitive behavioral therapy. If in our work together we agree that medication would be helpful, I’ll refer you to a skilled medical professional that is licensed to prescribe medication.
